Record in QuickTime, edit in iMovie, caption in a third app, clean audio in a fourth.
That was the reality of making a 5-minute product demo — four apps open at once. It's the screen recording workflow most Mac users know.
Knooth collapses all four steps into one app. Without uploading anything to the cloud.
Why Does This Exist?
Knooth's creator Baisampayan Saha described the problem directly: "I would record in one app, edit in another, clean and mix audio somewhere else. It always felt fragmented".
That's most people's screen recording experience. Screen Studio produces gorgeous output but has limited editing. Loom is fast but cloud-dependent and expensive for teams. Descript has powerful editing but isn't built specifically for screen recording.
Knooth's position is clear: a single native Mac app that handles everything from recording to AI editing — even offline.
It launched on Product Hunt in May 2026, earning 101 upvotes and ranking #12 for the day. Early users describe it as "very promising" for building product demos without manual editing.
What's Inside?
Here's what Knooth actually includes:
- Multi-Source Recording
Capture Mac screen, camera, microphone, and iPhone/iPad screen simultaneously. No need to record each source separately. - Layer-Based Timeline Editor
A built-in timeline supporting video, audio, text, image, and shape layers. Basic cut edits and caption placement happen here — no separate editor needed. - Local AI Captions
AI generates captions on your Mac without any cloud service. Your audio data never leaves your device. Generated captions are editable directly in the timeline. - Filler Word Removal
Automatically finds and removes "uh," "um," "like," and other filler words while maintaining natural flow. - Audio Cleanup + Cursor Auto-Zoom
Background noise reduction and automatic zoom on mouse clicks are included. Your demo looks polished without manual post-production.
What Changes?
When choosing a screen recording tool, you usually face one of two problems: beautiful output with limited editing, or powerful editing with cloud dependency. Knooth attempts to solve both with on-device AI.
| Loom | Screen Studio | Knooth | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recording Sources | Screen + Camera | Screen + Camera | Screen + Camera + iPhone/iPad |
| Timeline Editing | Basic trimming only | Limited | Layer-based timeline |
| AI Captions | Cloud-processed | Cloud-processed | Local only (no data upload) |
| Filler Word Removal | Paid plans only ($24/user) | Not available | Included |
| Cloud Dependency | Required | Optional | None (fully local) |
| Monthly Cost | $18–24/user | $9 (annual) | $9.99 |
Screen Studio's biggest strength is video quality. Automatic zoom and cursor smoothing produce Apple Keynote-level output. But there's no audio cleanup or captioning, so finishing a polished video still requires multiple steps.
Loom excels at team collaboration — AI auto-generates titles, summaries, and timestamp-based comments work great. The problem: team pricing at $18–24 per user per month. That's steep for solo creators or small teams.
Knooth targets the space between. Less visually polished than Screen Studio, but all the editing you need is there, and nothing leaves your device.
Who is this for?
If you're creating product demos, tutorials, or internal training videos and currently juggling multiple tools to edit them, Knooth simplifies the workflow considerably. If you're producing external marketing videos or YouTube content where visual quality comes first, Screen Studio's cinematic output may still be worth it.
Getting Started: The Essentials
- Install the App
Download from knooth.com. macOS only. On first launch, grant screen recording and microphone permissions. - Start Your First Recording
Click the menu bar icon → select recording sources (screen/camera/iPhone). For iPhone, connect via cable and select the mirroring option. - Apply AI Editing
After recording, enter the timeline editor. From the AI menu, select caption generation, filler removal, and audio cleanup. All runs locally. - Fine-Tune
Review and edit auto-generated captions and filler removal points in the timeline. Cursor auto-zoom keyframes are also manually adjustable. - Export
Export at your desired resolution. Start with a simple 5–10 minute product walkthrough to get comfortable with the flow.
Current Limitations
Knooth is early-stage. Advanced motion graphics and multi-track audio mixing aren't supported yet. If you need Screen Studio-level visual polish or Camtasia-level complexity, you may find it lacking. For professional editing-heavy projects, pairing Knooth with ScreenFlow or Final Cut Pro is worth considering.
