YouTube changed two things at once: how people find videos and how creators make them. Both.

Wait, what changed exactly?

At Google I/O 2026, YouTube announced two features. Ask YouTube — AI-powered conversational search. And Gemini Omni Shorts Remix — AI-driven scene transformation for creators.

Here's the context: YouTube has 2.72 billion monthly active users. Shorts gets 200 billion daily views, with a 5.91% engagement rate — the highest among short-form platforms. Both the discovery side and the creation side are going AI simultaneously. That's unprecedented.

Ask YouTube lets users ask complex questions like "tips for teaching a kid to ride a bike" — and instead of returning a list of videos, it compiles clips, provides a structured answer, and lets you ask follow-up questions. It links directly to the relevant timestamp in each video. Currently limited to US Premium subscribers (18+) at youtube.com/new, with a full rollout planned for this summer.

Gemini Omni Remix is the creator-side story. Add a text prompt to an eligible Short — "give it a 90s vibe," "insert me next to this creator" — and the AI transforms the scene while keeping the original context intact. Free, available now in Shorts Remix and YouTube Create. Every remixed video gets a SynthID watermark and links back to the original.

So YouTube SEO is a different game now?

Ask YouTube doesn't rank individual videos — it assembles answers. The shift: from "show me videos about X" to "understand my intent, build an answer, and use video clips as evidence".

What that means in practice: before, you put "how to ride a bike" in your title. Now you need to explicitly say — inside the video — what your clip answers, who it's for, and what problem it solves. The internal verbal structure becomes the discoverability signal.

On the creation side, Gemini Omni means prompting skill is now a core creative competency for Shorts. Before, jumping on a trend meant reshooting. Now it means one prompt and a style variant. The speed of trend participation changes fundamentally.

For marketers

Ask YouTube surfaces product comparisons, setup tutorials, and decision-stage content best. When AI assembles an answer for "which CRM should I use," your branded review could be the clip that gets surfaced. Design content as answers, not ads.

How to start adapting: the essentials

  1. Rewrite titles as questions
"Best video editing app" → "Which video editing app do real YouTube creators actually use?" Match the language of real intent, not keyword density.
  2. Declare your video's structure verbally
In the first 30 seconds, say out loud what the video covers and who it's for. This is how AI determines what questions to surface your clip for. Add spoken chapter markers too.
  3. Link long-form and Shorts
Long-form builds authority; Shorts expands discovery. Having multiple videos on the same topic gives Ask YouTube more source material to clip from — compounding your visibility.
  4. Try Gemini Omni Remix today
Open YouTube Shorts Remix or YouTube Create. Pick an existing Short. Try a style prompt. It's free. Get a feel for what's possible before it becomes standard practice.
  5. Set your remix permissions
Go to Settings → Content → Shorts to control AI visual remix opt-in/out. Default is ON, so decide consciously. Likeness Detection is now expanding to all creators 18+.
