An agent app that reaches out first · Claude Duet

Connect your email, calendar, and Slack once, and every morning Claude flags only what needs you

Claude Duet is an app Anthropic released as a research preview on Oct 21, and the scenes below are official demos from the company. Connect the apps you use, and Claude checks them every few hours, sends you a short summary each morning, and reaches out first when something needs your attention. It asks for approval before it sends messages or makes payments. For now, only Pro and Max users in the US can use it, through a waitlist. We also gathered reactions from people who tried it right after launch.

On Oct 21, Anthropic released Claude Duet as a research preview. It opened first to Pro and Max users in the US through a waitlist, and it isn't available outside the US yet. Claude's official X launch post passed 9.19 million views in two days, and more than 16,000 people bookmarked it. The Hacker News discussion drew 510 comments.

Jess Provencher, a real estate agent who runs Pro Homes and was featured in Anthropic's announcement, gets a rundown of the day from Duet every morning. One day, without being asked, Duet pointed out that a home showing Jess had set up with a client was on the calendar under a different date. Jess said, "[This is] exactly the kind of thing I want caught without having to ask."

Duet is a separate app from the main Claude app. Connect apps like Gmail, your calendar, Slack, QuickBooks, and Stripe, and Claude checks them on its own every few hours and reaches out only when something needs attention. Work you hand off continues on a virtual computer Duet runs in the cloud, so it keeps going while you're away. Before it sends a message, pays, signs, or deletes anything, it shows exactly what it's about to do and waits for your approval. You can use it in the iOS and Android apps or on claude.ai, and during the preview it's included in Pro and Max plans at no extra cost.

While prepping for a prospect call, Duet noticed it fell right before Mya's flight and offered to move it

Mya had a call with a prospective client on the calendar. Duet spotted the call and prepared materials to review before it. Then it noticed the call was right before Mya's flight and suggested moving it to another time without being asked. Mya said, "I didn't realize that it was right before my flight" and "I love that proactivity." Anthropic shared this scene in its announcement.

Amin runs Shahs of Kabob, a South Florida restaurant with several locations and about 110 employees. Amin used Duet for bookkeeping, customer service, and marketing, and had Duet sort invoices by location. Amin said, "It brings it all together" and "I don't need to open up 100 tabs." Anthropic shared this story in its announcement.

One line, 'Build me one page I can check every morning,' becomes a business dashboard, and it asks first before paying or sending email

On the product page, Anthropic walks through the app using a day in the life of Maya, who runs a fictional company called Marlo. The morning briefing lists what needs attention today, one line each: hiring, a new store opening, an order delivered to the wrong place over the weekend. Duet says it built an opening checklist from the last two openings and points to the one thing Maya has to handle personally today.

When the health permit fee comes due, Duet shows the payment details and waits for an answer with Approve and Not now buttons. After revising the investor meeting deck, it asks "Send from you?" before sending the email. When Maya sends the request below, Duet builds a dashboard that refreshes every morning at 5:30. Marlo had changed its shipping fees earlier, and Duet uses the dashboard to point out that subscription cancellations in the East Bay have gone up since then, then asks whether to dig deeper.

Build me one page I can check every morning. Is the business healthy, and where should I look?

Swap 'business' for whatever you keep an eye on every day: a shop, a project, property listings.

How people reacted

What people liked

  • “For example this morning it pinged me that it would be nice to put some case studies on the website based on recent reports I emailed. But wait, it actually went ahead and wrote those complete!! case studies and drafted emails asking people for permission to post them.. after that it proposed about 10 things and they were pretty big, like change pricing, edit contacts (it found something) they were all great suggestions, I approved them all and execution was great. So it completed a LOT OF WORK that I didn't even plan.”

  • “Gave it a trip booking task and was pretty dang comprehensive. … It couldn't enter any kind of payment information, so it compiled a budget, booking links, day-to-day itinerary, rental equipment. I already had flights booked and it used the confirmations from my email to figure out the dates and everything”

  • “It's polished compared to Dot launch. I tested speed vs Dot with the same prompt at the same time "sumnarize my last 20 emails" it was done in under a minute. Dot took 2 minutes. They both flagged the same emails but dot was more verbose.”

Dots is a similar agent OpenAI released earlier. "Dot" in the post refers to the same product.

    oZiix · Reddit r/ClaudeAIreddit.com
  • “it has context across both Claude code (cloud sessions) and Claude chat as well as all of your connected apps. I have a lot of different projects going on, so I'm using this as a coordinator to help me triage all the tasks that need to be done”

    yavasca · Reddit r/ClaudeAIreddit.com
  • “Claude Duet is the first personal agent I'd call a pro tool. It splits recurring topics into their own channels, keeps a running list of what it's working on and what it needs from me, and can edit docs, slides, designs, and dashboards and keep them current without leaving the app. It sends suggestions I actually want.”

A review written after two weeks of early access. Shipper got early access from Anthropic and noted that Anthropic was not involved in the review.

  • “This app is amazing. It is well designed. There are no sharp edges. … I think it is approximately 100 times more polished than Dots was when it came out.”

The founder of ChatPRD and host of How I AI, Claire got early access and made a 16-minute review video.

What fell short

  • “for a proactive agent, it just wasn't that proactive … once I set up Duet a couple of days ago and did a first couple of tasks, it never happened.”

What "never happened" is Duet reaching out first.

    Claire Vo · How I AIyoutube.com
  • “It did okay. It came up with a couple things, but the priority didn't seem right. The context didn't seem right. … The performance is so slow and you really feel that in a personal agent”

This came after handing off email and Slack triage. Claire said it took more than 10 minutes to finish a single thread or to ask for permission.

    Claire Vo · How I AIyoutube.com
  • “For now, it can see the Claude sessions on my computers, but it can't direct them; its email drafts are worse than Dot's; and its scheduled runs can't reach my custom connectors. There's no real voice mode yet, just transcription.”

Dan Shipper (Every co-founder and CEO) · Everyevery.to
  • “I've been testing it religiously, oh my gosh I'm disappointed. … No browser, no computer control, goes way into detail in the main thread, asks for too many approvals, doesn't follow my memory and rules from Claude web.”

    u22024 · Reddit r/ClaudeAIreddit.com
  • “It kinda sucks compared to its peers. It's a moving the right direction, but definitely launching behind dots and Grok Bot in terms of capability … Local Computer use is the biggest one. And tool use while using voice is extremely flakey”

Dots and Grok Bot are similar agents from OpenAI and xAI.

    stiverino · Reddit r/ClaudeAIreddit.com
  • “I got access a little while ago and was curious to compare how Duet worked to Muse's setup, so I asked it to give me an ls of its VM's files and it refused. … Anthropic should open up.”

Muse is a similar agent from Meta.

    russellbeattie · Hacker Newsnews.ycombinator.com
  • “OpenAI: it's 9pm you promised this person this note by EOD. … - Claude: hey you logged into Docusign, is that ok?”

A half-joking comparison from someone who said they had tried all three companies' products. The point: Claude checks on trivial things instead of the important ones.

    trjordan · Hacker Newsnews.ycombinator.com
  • “Weak. Can't even connect to SSH. So it's useless to me.”

How to start

Paste the request below into a Claude or ChatGPT chat, and it will pick out tasks from your work that suit Duet, along with the apps to connect. Right now Duet is available only to Pro and Max users in the US through the waitlist at claude.com/product/claude-duet, and not yet outside the US. You turn on email, calendar, and Slack connections yourself under Connectors in Claude's settings. Duet's morning summaries and background checks count toward the same usage limits as the rest of your Claude use.

  1. Starter prompt

Read the Claude Duet cases at https://www.working-ref.com/en/library/claude-duet-2026-10 and suggest three things from my work that I could hand off to Duet. For each one, list the apps to connect (email, calendar, Slack, and so on) and a first request I can send Duet as is. If you don't know what I do, ask me one or two questions first. When I pick one, polish that request right away. If none fits, start with a request asking Duet to flag, every morning, any appointment on my calendar that's on the wrong date or overlaps with another event.
