ChatGPT Ads landed in Korea on August 11. But this isn't the ad format you remember. Clicking one doesn't take you to a website. It opens a conversation with that business's AI agent instead.

So what actually changed?

Advertising used to be simple: click, land on a page, convert. The new campaign type quietly showing up in ChatGPT's Ads Manager beta breaks that formula. Click one, and instead of a URL, you get a conversation window with an AI agent built specifically for that business. OpenAI crawls the advertiser's website and product feed to build the agent, using the same underlying tech as custom GPTs — it answers questions, pulls data, and captures leads through a form to push the sale.

The timing is almost too neat. ChatGPT Ads started as a US-only test back in February. On August 11, it expanded to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea — all at once. Ads only show to Free and Go tier users; Plus and above stay ad-free. They're clearly labeled "Sponsored" underneath the AI's answer.

WhatsApp made the same call

Here's the part I find more interesting — Meta moved in the exact same direction, around the same time. Back in June, at its Conversations event in London, Meta officially launched Meta Business Agent. It answers customer questions inside WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, recommends products from your catalog, books appointments, and closes sales without a human ever stepping in. The combined daily user base across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger — a billion people — is the weapon here, and over a million businesses were already running the early version.

It wasn't going to stay free forever, though. Token-based billing kicked in on August 1. It's $2 per million tokens, and a typical WhatsApp conversation burns 20,000 to 25,000 tokens — so figure roughly 4 to 5 cents per conversation. Businesses that had been testing it for free are now looking at real invoices. From October, fees for messages outside pre-approved templates get added on top.

Why now, and why both at once?

The clue is in where search traffic is going. The same week, Yelp announced it's licensing 330 million reviews and data on over 8 million businesses to OpenAI. Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman put it plainly: "Yelp sees value in distributing its content beyond its own properties when it benefits consumers." ChatGPT just joined Yelp's existing distribution network alongside Yahoo+ and Apple Maps.

Meta and OpenAI are solving the same problem. People are asking AI before they search, so the calculation becomes: plant the customer touchpoint directly inside the AI conversation, not on a website. WhatsApp turned that into a real business with paid billing. ChatGPT went further and opened up the ad market in Korea, relocating the actual destination of a click into its own platform.

Don't assume it's still free

If your business turned on Meta Business Agent during the free testing window and left it running, billing likely already started on August 1. Check your usage and charges in the WhatsApp Business app right now.

What to prep right now

  1. Check your agent status in WhatsApp Business
Go to Tools → Meta Business Agent and see if it's on, and what August's bill looks like. Estimate a monthly budget based on your conversation volume.
  2. Clean up your product catalog and FAQ
The agent answers based on whatever catalog and info you've registered. Stale prices, stock, or FAQ entries mean it'll confidently give wrong answers.
  3. Register as an advertiser and check your ChatGPT business profile
Agent campaigns auto-generate a profile by crawling your website. If your site is thin right now, that's the first impression your agent makes.
  4. Redefine your KPIs for conversational channels
Stop measuring pageviews and sessions. Start tracking response time, autonomous resolution rate, and conversions per conversation — numbers your existing GA4 reports don't catch.
  5. Refresh your review-platform listings
More AI platforms are pulling directly from review sources like Yelp. Even if you're not US-based, cleaning up your review and info pages now costs nothing and pays off if a similar deal lands closer to home.
