OpenAI just acquired a presentation startup. On its own, that reads like "one more feature."

But line up its acquisitions from the last six months and the picture changes. Docs, canvas, a finance app, agent infrastructure, and now slides — piece by piece, it is assembling an office suite.

And the piece it is aiming at is PowerPoint. Microsoft, the company that makes PowerPoint, happens to be OpenAI's biggest investor.

So what does NextSlide actually do?

NextSlide built AI that turns prompts, notes, documents, and research into a polished, editable presentation. It launched in early 2025 and ran independently for about a year.

The deal actually closed earlier this year, but was not announced until August 8. Founder Ahmed Beshry said on LinkedIn the announcement was "a few months late". This is his second exit — he previously co-founded Caper AI, a smart-cart startup Instacart acquired in 2021.

Beshry put the company's mission this way: "to make visual communication more accessible and help more people express their ideas clearly," adding he would keep pursuing that same mission at OpenAI. The whole team has moved onto ChatGPT's core team — they are not building NextSlide anymore, they are building ChatGPT.

This is not OpenAI's first office-suite piece

Looked at alone, NextSlide reads like "one feature added." Line up the recent acquisition history and a pattern shows up — docs, canvas, file handling, and now slides, piece by piece filling out an office suite.

What matters here: this is not even OpenAI's first move into presentations. It already shipped a beta PowerPoint add-in for ChatGPT back in May 2026 — create new slides from a prompt, rewrite existing ones, even turn screenshots into editable slides, all from a sidebar. The NextSlide acquisition just stacks another layer on top of that.

Here is the uncomfortable part

The product NextSlide is ultimately going after is PowerPoint. Microsoft is OpenAI's largest investor, and EU and UK regulators are already scrutinizing that relationship. A feature aimed squarely at your biggest shareholder's flagship product, built inside a company that shareholder holds equity in — that is the shape of this.

A structural conflict of interest

The more OpenAI scales up slide, doc, and canvas features toward replacing PowerPoint and Word, the more it looks like Microsoft's own investment is eating Microsoft's flagship products. That is exactly what regulators keep watching.

Google took the opposite route. Instead of acquiring its way to an office suite, it layered AI onto the docs and slides tools it already owns, Gemini Spark. Same destination, an AI office suite, but OpenAI is buying pieces while Google is integrating them.

How to check your presentation workflow right now

  1. Audit what you are actually using
Check inside your team how much of your workflow runs on Gamma, Canva, or ChatGPT. If everything is locked into one tool, that is your biggest risk right now.
  2. Try the ChatGPT PowerPoint add-in first
It is still beta but free. Test it on decks you build repeatedly — weekly reports, proposal drafts — and judge the quality yourself.
  3. Do not rush to switch subscriptions yet
OpenAI has not said when or how NextSlide's tech lands inside ChatGPT. Revisit your Gamma or Canva subscription at renewal, not before.
  4. Save repeat decks as prompt templates
Capture your brand tone, slide structure, and data sources in a reusable prompt, so switching tools later costs less.
  5. Shift your personal edge from design to persuasion
Making slides pretty is increasingly the tool's job. Choosing what data to show, in what order, and building a story that actually moves an audience — that is the skill that lasts.
